Our elections are always complicated. A member can vote for individual delegates and officers or vote for a slate. Some of our elections would take days to tally because of the number of members who voted for individuals rather than for a slate. With your system, we start and finish the election, for both delegates and offices, in a few hours. Wonderful work.
For years our condominium complex used balloting systems that were online. A number of residents complained because they didn’t trust the process and like many elections, challenged the authority of those who won. This is the third year using your services. Now, everyone trusts the process because they can see their ballots scanned. Our members may not like the people elected to run our condo but now they believe they were elected legitimately.
This is our fifth election cycle working with the AAA and OSC election teams. Since our election is national, ballots are sent to members all over the country. These ballots are returned in large envelopes we provide with an identifier on the outside. The ballot is in a small envelope within the large envelope. All envelopes remain sealed until the day of the election when the outside envelope is scanned for member validation, and the inside envelope is opened and the ballot scanned. We do this to ensure the integrity of our elections. While the election ballot is anonymous, we can first ensure that incoming ballots are coming from union members and we eliminate the possibility that illegal ballots are presented as real ballots. For years our 25,000 members used paper ballots for the election of officers. It took days to tally the votes and union observers complained about the time it took to report results. Three years ago we moved from paper to online voting, and that presented us with a new set of problems. How do we actually know who is voting. We generally get 45% of our members to vote in a paper election. In the two years that we've used online voting, participation increased to 68%.
